The Neon Tetra Fish (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most popular and attractive small freshwater aquarium fish. It is well known for its striking electric-blue horizontal stripe and vibrant red coloration, which creates a beautiful glowing effect when the fish swim together as a school.
Neon Tetras are peaceful, active schooling fish and are an excellent choice for planted aquariums and community tanks. Their small size and attractive appearance make them especially popular among beginners, aquascaping enthusiasts and experienced aquarium keepers.
For the best appearance and natural behavior, Neon Tetras should be maintained in a group rather than individually. A larger school allows them to swim confidently together and creates an attractive moving display in the aquarium.
Recommended Water Parameters
| Parameter | Recommended Range |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 22–26°C |
| pH | Approximately 6.0–7.5 |
| Water Type | Freshwater |
| Ammonia | 0 ppm |
| Nitrite | 0 ppm |
| Nitrate | Keep low with regular water changes |
Avoid sudden changes in temperature and water chemistry. A properly cycled aquarium with regular maintenance is important for long-term health.
Group Size
Neon Tetras are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in a group of 6 or more, with larger groups often providing a more impressive display and greater confidence.
A school of Neon Tetras swimming together can add movement and vibrant color to planted aquariums and community tanks.
Diet
Neon Tetras are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet.
Recommended Foods
