The Wagtail Swordtail Fish is a beautiful and popular freshwater livebearer known for its distinctive dark-colored fins and attractive body coloration. The name “Wagtail” refers to the contrasting dark fins and tail, which create an eye-catching appearance against the fish’s lighter body.
Swordtails are active, peaceful community fish that add movement and color to freshwater aquariums. They are relatively easy to care for, making them a suitable choice for both beginner and experienced aquarium keepers.
The Wagtail Swordtail thrives in a clean, well-maintained aquarium with plenty of open swimming space and some plants or decorations for shelter. A balanced diet of quality flakes, pellets, and suitable vegetable-based foods can help maintain healthy growth and coloration.
- pH Level: 7.0 to 8.4 (neutral to alkaline)
- Water Temperature: 72°F – 82°F (22°C – 28°C; optimal is 75°F – 78°F)
- General Hardness (GH): 10 to 30 dGH (moderately hard to hard)
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 4 to 15 dKH
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (must be strictly zero)
- Nitrate: Under 20–25 ppm
Diet
- Quality flakes and small pellets: Choose floating flakes or micro-pellets as their main daily food source.
- Omnivore or livebearer formulas: Look for commercial foods that combine both plant and animal ingredients.
- High-protein supplements: Feed frozen or live Blood worms, brine shrimp, daphnia, 2 to 3 times a week.
- Livebearers: Guppies, mollies, and platies share similar water requirements, though note that platies can interbreed with swordtails.
- Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras catfish and bristlenose plecos keep the lower levels active and clean without bothering the swordtails.
- Active Schooling Fish: Small tetras (like neon tetras) and zebra danios add movement to the upper and middle water columns.
