The Boesemani Rainbow Fish (Melanotaenia boesemani) is a stunning tropical freshwater fish known for its distinctive two-tone coloration and active schooling behavior. Mature males can develop an attractive combination of blue, purple, orange and golden tones, making them a popular choice for planted aquariums and colorful community tanks. Boesemani Rainbowfish are active swimmers and look particularly impressive when maintained in a proper group. They are peaceful community fish, but their energetic swimming style means they are best housed with other peaceful fish of compatible size and temperament. A group of 6–8 or more is recommended by aquarium-care references for better social behavior and male coloration. This species is native to the Ajamaru Lakes region of Indonesia and is a tropical freshwater fish. In an aquarium, it benefits from stable, clean water, efficient filtration, open swimming space and planted areas.

Boesemani Rainbowfish Mature males can develop striking blue/purple coloration toward the front of the body with orange-gold coloration toward the rear. They are active schooling fish and are best kept in a group rather than individually. FishBase records a maximum size of about 9 cm standard length for males/unsexed fish and 7 cm for females.

🍽️ Boesemani Rainbowfish Diet

Boesemani Rainbowfish are omnivorous and relatively unfussy feeders. They generally accept a variety of dried, frozen and live foods. A varied diet can also help support good coloration.

Recommended Foods

Staple foods:

• High-quality tropical fish pellets
• Small floating or slow-sinking pellets
• Quality flakes

Supplementary foods:

• Brine shrimp / Artemia
• Daphnia
• Bloodworms
• Other suitable frozen foods
• Small live foods

  Feeding Routine

Feed small portions once or twice daily, giving only what the fish can consume quickly. Avoid overfeeding because leftover food can increase organic waste and negatively affect water quality.
