Add a unique and elegant appearance to your koi pond with the Scaleless Koi Carp Fish, commonly known as Doitsu Koi. Doitsu Koi are ornamental koi characterized by a largely smooth, scale-reduced body. Depending on the individual, they may have almost completely exposed skin or neat rows of larger mirror scales along the dorsal and lateral areas.
Unlike traditional fully scaled koi, Doitsu Koi have a smooth body that allows their natural colors and patterns to appear particularly clear and defined. This scale type can occur across many koi varieties, including Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, Goshiki, Ogon and others.
The smooth skin and distinctive scale arrangement make Doitsu Koi an attractive choice for koi enthusiasts looking for something different from conventional scaled carp. Their bold pattern definition can be especially noticeable because there are fewer scales interrupting the appearance of the underlying coloration.
- pH Level: 7.0 to 8.5 (ideally stable around 7.5). Stability prevents sudden osmotic shock.
- Water Temperature: 59°F to 77°F (15°C to 25°C), with a safe survival range of just above freezing to mid-80s. Avoid swings greater than 2°F per hour.
- Ammonia: 0 ppm. Any detectable level above 0.02 ppm stresses fish.
- Nitrite: 0 ppm. Levels above 0.1 ppm require immediate action.
- Nitrate: Below 40–50 ppm, managed via regular partial water changes.
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 4 to 6 dKH (or 70–100+ ppm) to buffer the water and prevent dangerous pH crashes.
- General Hardness (GH): 4 to 6 dGH (or mineral levels around 100–250 mg/L) for proper osmoregulation.
- Dissolved Oxygen: Above 6 ppm, maintained with good aeration and water circulation.
Diet
- Commercial Pellets: Use a balanced staple pellet containing 32% to 36% crude protein formulated specifically for koi. Match pellet size to the fish’s length (e.g., 3.5 mm for 8-inch fish, 5 mm for 12-inch fish.
- Supplements: Offer healthy treats in moderation, such as thawed frozen green peas, chopped lettuce, diced watermelon, or boiled shrimp.
- Treat Frozon bloodworms can be fed two times a week.
Tank mates
- Single-Bodied Goldfish: Varieties like Comet, Common, or Shubunkin goldfish thrive in identical cool-water temperatures, eat the same foods, and move fast enough to avoid conflict.Â
- Golden Orfe: These active, large-growing, deep-orange fish swim near the upper levels of the water and get along well with koi.
- Dojo Loaches (Weather Loaches): Peaceful bottom-dwellers that tolerate cold water, though you should ensure your koi are not large enough to view them as a meal.
Note: – All Our live stock is well Quarantined & settled before we sell. We follow very strict quarantine process so no need to worry about the quality of the fishes we sell. You can always visit our store located at Vijayanagar Bengaluru to see our quality of live fishes.
