Add lively movement and natural beauty to your freshwater aquarium with the Malabar Danio Fish (Devario malabaricus), an active freshwater species native to the Indian subcontinent. Also known as the Malabar Danio, this attractive fish is appreciated for its streamlined body, shimmering coloration and energetic swimming behavior.
Malabar Danios are active schooling fish that are best maintained in groups. Their constant movement through the aquarium can create an attractive display, particularly in aquariums with plenty of open swimming space and gentle water movement.
This species can be a suitable choice for a well-planned community aquarium with compatible, similarly sized fish. Plants, rocks and natural décor can be used around the sides and rear of the aquarium while leaving enough open space for swimming.
Keep Malabar Danios in a group of at least 6 fish and provide plenty of open swimming space. Because they are active swimmers, a longer aquarium is generally preferable to a very tall aquarium.
Use plants, rocks and driftwood to create structure while retaining an unobstructed swimming area. Good filtration and regular water changes are important for maintaining healthy aquarium condition
- Temperature: 64–77°F (18–25°C) — they prefer the cooler side of tropical ranges.
- pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic/alkaline).
- Water Hardness: 2–15 °dGH (soft to moderately hard).
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (essential for a fully cycled tank).
