Bristlenose Pleco

The Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus sp.) is one of the most popular and versatile algae-eating catfish in the freshwater aquarium hobby. Unlike Common Plecos that outgrow standard home aquariums, the Bristlenose Pleco reaches a manageable adult size of just 4 to 5 inches, making it a perfect addition to mid-to-large-sized tanks.

Featuring a dark brown-to-black body accented with beautiful light speckled patterning, this hardy bottom dweller spends its time grazing on algae, biofilm, and organic debris. As they mature, males develop distinct tentacle-like bristles around their snouts, giving them their iconic appearance. They are extremely peaceful toward other community fish species like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras, making them a cornerstone component of any natural cleanup crew.

Diet

• Primary Diet: Herbivorous/vegetarian omnivore; feeds on green algae, biofilm, spirulina flakes, and sinking algae wafers.
• Vegetables: Blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, squash, or green beans (offered a few times a week).
• Protein: Occasional protein sources like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or sinking carnivore/omnivore pellets.
• Essential Wood: Must have driftwood in the tank; they rasp on wood fibers, which are necessary for their digestive health.

Growth and Size

• Adult Size: Reaches 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) in length.
• Growth Rate: Reaches near-adult size around 1 to 2 years of age.
• Sexual Dimorphism: Mature males develop prominent, branching, tentacle-like snout bristles, whereas females either lack bristles or have very small, non-branching marginal bristles.
