The Red Chilli Oscar Fish is a striking ornamental cichlid admired for its intense red and orange coloration and bold appearance. With its vibrant body patterns and active personality, this Oscar variety can become an impressive centerpiece fish in a suitably sized freshwater aquarium.
Oscar fish are intelligent, interactive, and known for recognizing their keepers. They are best suited to experienced aquarists who can provide a spacious aquarium, powerful filtration, regular water changes, and a nutritious diet.
The Red Chilli Oscar should be fed a balanced diet formulated for large cichlids, along with suitable supplemental foods. Maintaining stable water conditions and providing adequate swimming space will help support healthy growth and coloration.
- Temperature: 24°C – 28°C (75°F – 82°F) with high stability. Avoid daily swings over 1–2°F.
- pH Level: 6.5 – 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral). Stability is more important than chasing a specific number.
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard, 5 – 20 dGH. Keep carbonate hardness (KH) at least 4 dGH to prevent pH crashes.
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm at all times.
- Nitrate: Below 30 ppm (ideally under 20 ppm). High nitrates lead to health issues like hole-in-the-head disease.
- High-Quality Pellets: Use large, floating cichlid or Oscar-specific pellets as the base of their daily diet for complete nutrition.
- Color Enhancers: Look for foods containing natural pigment enhancers like Pacific krill, shrimp meal, or astaxanthin to keep their red colors vivid.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Feed protein-rich supplements 3 to 4 times a week, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, earthworms, or krill.
- Silver Dollars: Active, robust schooling fish that swim in the upper and middle levels, encouraging your Oscar to stay active.
- Severums: Peaceful South American cichlids that grow large (8 to 9 inches) and sport a different body shape, making them calm and respected companions.
- Geophagus Cichlids: Bottom-sifting cichlids that help clean up uneaten food particles from the sand substrate.
- Blood Parrot Cichlids: Bulky, peaceful hybrid cichlids with mild temperaments that generally coexist well without bullying.
- Large Plecos (e.g., Bristlenose or Common Pleco): Armored bottom-dwellers that help manage algae and scavenge debris, though they require a spacious tank.Â
