Native to South America, Angelfish are available in a variety of colours and patterns, including silver, black, marble, gold, and koi varieties. Their unique appearance and fascinating behaviour make them a favourite choice for aquarists looking to create a beautiful tropical aquarium.
Angelfish thrive in warm, clean freshwater with stable water parameters, good filtration, and plenty of swimming space. They do well in planted aquariums and benefit from an environment with driftwood, aquatic plants, and open swimming areas. They are omnivorous and can be fed high-quality tropical fish flakes, pellets, and suitable frozen or live foods.
Although relatively peaceful when young, adult Angelfish may become territorial, especially during breeding. Choose tank mates carefully and provide an appropriately sized aquarium as they grow.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C) (ideally 78°F to 82°F / 26°C to 28°C)
- pH Level: 6.0 to 7.8 (ideally 6.5 to 7.0 for comfort and stability; soft acidic water down to 6.2 is preferred for wild types or breeding)
- General Hardness (GH): 3 to 12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water; 4 to 8 dGH is optimal)
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 1 to 10 dKH (ideally 3 to 8 dKH to provide necessary pH buffering and prevent dangerous pH crashes)
- Ammonia (NH₃): 0 ppm (any detectable ammonia causes severe stress, chemical burns, or death)
- Nitrite (NO₂⁻): 0 ppm (any detectable nitrite is toxic and indicates an uncycled or crashing filter)
- Nitrate (NO₃⁻): Below 20 ppm (keep low via weekly water changes; high nitrates stunt growth and weaken the immune system)
Diet
- Flakes and Granules: High-quality tropical flakes or slow-sinking pellets.
- Live and Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, Brine shrimp, blackworms, Daphnia, Frozen bloodworms are especially effective for conditioning adult angelfish to spawn.
Tank Mates
Bottom Dwellers: Corydoras Catfish, Bristlenose Plecos, and loaches stay near the substrate, far away from angelfish territory.
