The Red Cherry Shrimp is a popular freshwater ornamental shrimp admired for its vibrant red coloration, small size, and peaceful nature. These attractive shrimp are especially popular in planted and nano aquariums, where they spend much of their time grazing on algae, biofilm, and food particles.
Red Cherry Shrimp are active little aquarium inhabitants that move across plants, rocks, driftwood, and other surfaces while searching for food. Their bright red color provides a beautiful contrast against green aquatic plants, making them an excellent choice for aquascapes.
They are relatively easy to care for when provided with stable water parameters, adequate filtration, and suitable food. A mature aquarium with natural biofilm, plants, hiding spaces, and gentle water flow can provide an ideal environment.
- Temperature: 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C), with 72–78°F as the optimal range for breeding and activity.
- pH Level: 6.5 to 8.0 (neutral to slightly alkaline is best).
- General Hardness (GH): 6 to 14 dGH (110–250 ppm) to ensure proper minerals for molting their exoskeletons.
- Carbonate Hardness (KH): 2 to 8 dKH (40–140 ppm) to stabilize pH swings.
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 100 to 300 ppm (mostly relevant if you re-mineralize pure RO water).
- Biofilm: A thin layer of microscopic organisms, bacteria, and fungi that grows on glass, rocks, and plants.
- Algae: Soft green or brown algae, though they generally ignore hair or string algae.
- Detritus: Decaying plant leaves and organic debris.
- Old Molts: They frequently eat their own shed exoskeletons to absorb essential calcium for their shells.
- Commercial bottom feeders and high protein shrimp foods
- Other Shrimp: Amano shrimp and ghost shrimp match their peaceful nature and similar size.
- Filter Shrimp: Bamboo and vampire shrimp are completely harmless filter-feeders.
- Freshwater Snails: Nerite, ramshorn, and Malaysian trumpet snails clean algae without bothering shrimp (avoid assassin snails, which may prey on tiny shrimp).
