The Rainbow Shark is a striking freshwater aquarium fish known for its dark, streamlined body and vibrant red to orange fins and tail. Its contrasting coloration makes it an eye-catching addition to a well-maintained community aquarium.
Despite its “shark” name, the Rainbow Shark is not a marine shark. It is a freshwater fish that is popular among aquarists for its active swimming behavior and attractive appearance. It is generally best kept in a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming space, hiding areas, plants, rocks, and other suitable décor.
Rainbow Sharks can become territorial, particularly toward their own kind and similarly shaped bottom-dwelling fish. Providing adequate hiding space and carefully selecting tank mates can help reduce aggression and territorial behavior.

- pH Level: 6.5 – 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
- Water Hardness: 5 – 15 dGH (soft to moderately hard).
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (they are sensitive to spikes).
- Nitrate: Keep low (under 20 ppm) via routine water changes.
- Water Flow: Moderate to strong current to mimic their natural river habitats.
Diet
- Commercial Sinking Foods: Sinking bottom-feeder pellets and high-quality omnivore flakes or granules that reach the substrate.
- Meaty Treats: Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and tubifex worms (offered as an occasional protein supplement).
- Fast Tetras: Black skirt, rummynose, and Congo tetras , Columbian Tetras.
- Active Barbs: Tiger barbs, cherry barbs, and Odessa barbs.
- Danios: Zebra danios and giant danios.
- Rainbowfish: Boesemani or dwarf neon rainbowfish.
- Mid-Level Gouramis: Pearl or blue gouramis.
