The Siamese Algae Eater is a popular freshwater aquarium fish valued for its active nature and ability to graze on algae. Its streamlined body, silver coloration, and distinctive dark horizontal stripe give it a recognizable appearance, while its constant foraging behavior makes it a useful addition to many planted and community aquariums.
Siamese Algae Eaters spend much of their time exploring aquarium surfaces, plants, rocks, and decorations in search of food. They can help consume different types of algae, although they should not be relied upon as the sole method of aquarium maintenance.
For healthy growth, provide a clean, well-filtered aquarium with plenty of swimming space and surfaces for grazing. A varied diet is recommended, including quality sinking foods and suitable vegetable-based foods, particularly when natural algae is limited.
- Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
- pH Level: 6.0–7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Water Hardness (GH/KH): Soft to moderate, around 4–15 dKH (1 to 20° dGH)
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (must be in a fully cycled tank)
- Nitrate: Below 20 ppm
Diet
- Hair algae and green thread algae
- Black beard algae (BBA), which few other fish will touch
- Biofilm and soft microalgae
- Fish flakes and sinking pellets
- Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms
- Tetras and Danios: Fast, mid-to-top dwelling schooling fish like Rummy Nose Tetras or Zebra Danios stay out of their way and handle similar water conditions.
- Corydoras Catfish: Peaceful bottom-dwellers that share the lower levels, though your Siamese algae eater might occasionally dash for the same food.
- Gouramis: Gentle, hardy labyrinth fish that add color and temperament balance to a community setup.
- Peaceful Barbs: Active species like Tiger Barbs do well, provided the tank is large enough to manage their energy.
