The Dream Blue Shrimp is a beautiful freshwater ornamental shrimp prized for its rich blue coloration and compact size. The shrimp shown in the supplied image displays a vivid blue body that creates an attractive contrast against dark aquarium substrate and green aquatic plants.

Blue Dream Shrimp are a popular choice for planted aquariums, nano tanks, and freshwater shrimp tanks. They are peaceful, active, and spend much of their time grazing on biofilm, algae, and leftover food on surfaces throughout the aquarium.

They thrive in a stable, mature aquarium with clean water, gentle filtration, hiding places, and suitable plants or natural décor. Their bright blue coloration can make them a striking addition to a dedicated shrimp setup or a carefully selected peaceful community aquarium.

Ideal Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 68–78°F (20–26°C); the sweet spot is 70–74°F. Higher temperatures increase activity and breeding but shorten their overall lifespan.

  • pH Level: 6.5–7.5 (tolerable up to 8.0). Avoid rapid swings greater than 0.2 within a 24-hour window.

  • General Hardness (GH): 6–10 dGH. Essential calcium and magnesium levels are needed for successful molting.

  • Carbonate Hardness (KH): 2–5 dKH. Acts as a buffer to stabilize your pH and prevent sudden crashes.

  • Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 150–250 ppm (tolerable up to 300 ppm).

  • Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (any detectable amount is toxic or lethal).

  • Nitrate: Under 20 ppm, ideally kept below 10 ppm via routine maintenance.
Natural Diet
  • Biofilm & Microorganisms: The layer of beneficial gunk, bacteria, and micro-algae that grows on hardscape, glass, and live plants serves as their continuous food source.

  • Algae: They actively graze on soft algae types, including green hair algae.

  • Botanicals: Indian almond leaves and alder cones break down slowly to cultivate rich biofilm colonies.

    Supplemental Foods

    • Commercial Shrimp Pellets: High-quality invertebrate formulas supply a balanced mix of proteins, minerals, and spirulina to enhance blue pigmentation.

    • Algae Wafers: Plant-based wafers offer essential fiber and mirror their wild forage.

    • Calcium Supplements: Mineral rocks, cuttlebone, or specialized calcium foods help support safe molting and strong exoskeleton development.
    Tank Mates

    • Otocinclus Catfish: Gentle, small grazers that stick to cleaning surfaces and do not bother adult or baby shrimp.

    • Pygmy Corydoras: Tiny (around 1 inch), shy bottom-dwellers that occupy the substrate without competing aggressively for food.

    • Chili Rasboras & Nano Fish: Extremely small fish (under 1 inch) like Chili Rasboras, Ember Tetras, or Celestial Pearl Danios are generally peaceful with adults, though dense plants are still needed to protect occasional newborn shrimplets.

    • Amano Shrimp: Larger, peaceful shrimp that do not interbreed with Neocaridina and serve as exceptional algae eaters.

    • Freshwater Snails: Nerite Snails, Mystery Snails, and Ramshorn Snails make fantastic waste-and-algae cleanup companions.
    Tank Mates to Avoid

    • Large or Predatory Fish: Bettas, Angelfish, Cichlids, Gouramis, Goldfish, and Loaches will actively hunt or pick off adult and juvenile shrimp. Even a supposedly “peaceful” community betta can wipe out a small colony in days.

    • Pea Puffers: Specialized invertebrate hunters that will quickly kill and eat your blue dreams.
