Add vibrant color and lively movement to your aquarium with the Melon Barb Fish (Haludaria fasciata), an attractive freshwater schooling fish native to southern India. It is associated with the rivers and streams of the Western Ghats, including areas of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa.
The Melon Barb is named for its beautiful warm coloration. Depending on sex, locality and condition, the fish can display shades of pink, red, orange, yellow and gold, complemented by distinctive dark vertical bands across the body. Males generally develop stronger red or melon-pink coloration, particularly when mature or in breeding condition. This active fish is best maintained as part of a group, where it can display natural schooling behavior. Provide plenty of open swimming space along with aquatic plants, rocks or driftwood around the edges of the aquarium. A well-maintained planted community aquarium can help showcase its attractive colors and active behavior.
Melon Barbs are omnivorous and can be offered quality flakes or small pellets along with suitable frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. A varied diet can help support health and coloration.
Keep Melon Barbs in a suitable group rather than as a solitary fish. Provide open swimming space, plants and hiding areas, while maintaining clean and stable freshwater conditions. Because they are active swimmers, choose tankmates with compatible size, temperament and swimming behavior. Some aquarium sources also caution against keeping them with slow-moving or long-finned fish because fin-nipping can occur in certain setups.
- Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C)
- pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Water Hardness: 2 to 12 dGH (or KH 5–12)
- Water Flow: Moderate to fast flow, mimicking their native hill streams in the Western Ghats of India
- Oxygenation: High dissolved oxygen levels
Diet
- Dry Foods: High-quality flake food, small pellets, granules, and spirulina or algae flakes/wafers to support their color and grazing behavior.
- Live and Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia), and microworms to bring out their vibrant red and orange coloration.
- Portion Size: Feed small amounts once or twice a day, only what they can finish within a few minutes.
- Foraging Habits: Wild melon barbs forage along the bottom and take sand into their mouths to sift for food. Sinking pellets or varied food placement ensure they get their share, though vigorous feeding means they may outcompete shy tankmates.
Tank Mates
- Other Active Cyprinids: Fast-moving midwater swimmers like Danios, Cherry Barbs, Rosy Barbs, and Giant Danios match their high energy.
- Peaceful Bottom Dwellers: Hardy bottom scavengers like Corydoras Catfish and peaceful Loaches (such as Clown Loaches) utilize different areas of the tank.
- Community Fish: Moderately active Tetras, Rasboras, and peaceful Gouramis do well if they are not overly timid.
Note: – All Our live stock is well Quarantined & settled before we sell. We follow very strict quarantine process so no need to worry about the quality of the fishes we sell. You can always visit our store located at Vijayanagar Bengaluru to see our quality of live fishes.
