Known as the “poor man’s discus” due to its impressive, deep-bodied disc shape and peaceful cichlid demeanor, this striking variety showcases a brilliant orange-to-gold body heavily peppered with radiant red spots and intricate worm-like facial markings.
Growing up to 8 inches in length, the Red Spotted Severum makes an exceptional centerpiece or community cichlid for medium-to-large aquariums. They are relatively docile compared to other cichlids, though they appreciate plenty of open swimming space alongside driftwood, rocks, and sturdy live plants.
- Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F)
- pH Level: 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Water Hardness (GH): 3 to 12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water)
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 100 to 200 ppm
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm (must be fully cycled)
- Nitrate: < 20 to 40 ppm (managed via regular partial water changes)
Diet
- Cichlid Pellets or Flakes: High-quality sinking cichlid pellets or flakes with a strong plant base should form the foundation of their daily nutrition. Look for formulas that list spirulina, algae, or kelp near the top of the ingredients list.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Supplement their diet 1 to 2 times a week with protein sources like bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, or krill. Krill and shrimp.
