Add a touch of elegance to your aquarium with the Albino Geophagus Heckelii. Also commonly referred to as the Albino Threadfin Eartheater, this prized morph showcases an iridescent cream-to-pinkish body adorned with shimmering speckles and vibrant reddish-orange pelvic and anal fins. As mature specimens settle into their environment, they display impressive long filaments extending from their dorsal fins.
True to their eartheater nature, these fish spend hours sifting fine sand through their gills in search of food particles, helping to keep substrate clean and aerated. Despite their impressive size as adults, they maintain a relatively peaceful disposition, making them well-suited for setups with other non-aggressive cichlids and larger schooling fish.
Key Features:
- Striking Albino Coloration: Features bright pink/red eyes, shimmering pearl-white scales, and rich red-orange finnage.
- Graceful Fin Extensions: Develops elegant, elongated filaments on the dorsal and tail fins as it matures.
- Natural Substrate Sifter: Constantly sifts through fine sandy substrate, keeping the bottom clean and active.
- Peaceful Community Cichlid: Generally non-aggressive towards non-cichlid tank mates and larger peaceful species.
- Showpiece Centerpiece Fish: Highly sought-after morph that stands out dramatically against dark aquatic backgrounds and planted environments.
- Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C)
- pH Level: 6.0 – 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): 80 – 150 ppm (ideal for home-bred strains)
- Stability: Consistent parameters are far more important than aggressively chasing a specific number.
Diet
- Pellets and Granules: High-quality sinking cichlid pellets, community formulas, and specialized granules . Use smaller-sized granules for juveniles and larger pellets as they grow up to 8 inches.
- Frozen and Live Foods: Blood worms, Artemia
- Flakes: Good for smaller or young specimens, though sinking options are preferred as they mature.
Tank mates
- Other Earth-Eaters & Peaceful Cichlids: Other Geophagus species, Severum cichlids
- Larger Tetras: Active mid-to-top swimming tetras large enough not to be swallowed such as Silver Dollars, Congo Tetras, Columbian Teras, Lemon Tetras
- Rainbowfish: Peaceful, active schooling fish that occupy the upper and middle layers and won’t nip at the Heckelii’s long, flowing fin extensions.Â
- Bottom Dwellers: Larger Corydoras species or peaceful loricariid catfish (like Bristlenose plecos) that keep to themselves, provided there is enough floor space on the sand bed.
